I got this CD for my wife, thinking that it would be a safe pop album, like the songs you hear from it on the radio. It was that, and much more. It is more interesting and complex musically than most albums by rock bands. The apparent influences of this album vary from reggae to big band, even rock. The songs are all unique (something surprising in a "pop" album). The last song, Capri, is a little odd, but that is the case on many contemporary rock albums. If you like pop, buy this album. If you like contemporary adult rock, buy this album. If you like heavier rock and, like me, are reading this review to see if this CD is worth buying for someone else, buy, give it a good listen, download the good songs (legally of course) and then pass it on. It's really great.

I purchased Martha's special cookie magazine at Christmas a few years back, and it's simply falling apart now because I've made her cookies again and again. I was excited to see this book as a lot of my favorites from the cookie mag are included and the protective book allows me to keep these yummy recipes in one safe place. The photos are stunning - there's a pictorial table of contents (very unique!) based on things like 'soft and chewy' and 'crisp and crunchy' and there's even a delightful section in the back that shows you how to package your cookies for gifting. I simply can't wait to try the all the recipes!

This is an excellent guide for the consumers to choose quality supplements. It gives ratings (1 to 5 stars) to more than 1500 multivitamins in North America. Supplements from Kroger, Walgrees and costco, etc get a very low score of their products. I'm suprised. The Land Before Time
This 1988 animated feature from Don Bluth (An American Tail) focuses on an orphaned young dinosaur, Littlefoot, who has to make his way to the paradise of the Great Valley in order to survive a plague. Along the way, he meets up with some other dinos from different species, and they all bond and travel together. On the way, they have plenty of adventures. Even with elements of suspense, this is a pretty relaxed movie that isn't in a particular hurry to roll out its story. Kids will like the originality of the concept, and the themes of friendship and cooperation are well woven into the fabric of the entertainment, plus the music is great. This is one of the better films made for kids. I watched it a ton when I was younger, and can now admit that I was positively terrified of Sharptooth.

Unfortunately, they couldn't stop making sequels. Now, our prehistoric heroes have been reduced to a bunch of computer generated dinos, prancing around singing annoyingly about diversity.

My wife and I recently purchased this movie for my four-year old son and I have to admit I was very surprised at the quality of the movie from a productiona and storytelling standpoint.

I was very sceptical at first. I have never cared for Don Bluth's style (I thought he was generally too dark for a children's animator), although I never considered him lacking talent. I just figured I was in for another cheap kid's movie with nothing to find of interest to an adult and (hopefully) nothing very offensive.

Well, I was first struck by the brilliant orchestral score. I consider myself a mild aficionado of classical music and I will tell you, my firends, the score in this film is both musically complex and emotionally affecting. Listen closely neat the movie's opening, as Littlefoot pops out of his egg. The music's tenderness and joy is wonderful!

Next, having viewed the movie all the way through, I was really shocked to realize the thing was utterly devoid of ANY social or environmental message, the kind of drool-inducing pap they shove down kids' throats at every turn nowadays (anyone seen "Ferngully"?). Of course, one could make the case the movie comments about prejudice, but it also extolls virtues like perservereance, conviction and teamwork! It's just a great story, simply told, about dinosaurs! And what kid doesn't like dinosaurs?

And for anyone who hasn't seen it yet, don't worry about violence or any adult themes (like death). The adult themes are all handled with grace and tact, in the absolute best taste. And the violence is bloodless and done in a way that is exciting, but not scary. I'd recommend to any parents to get a good, well-illustrated book on dinosaurs before showing this movie to their kids - if they like the movie, you will have a great opportunity to spark their imaginations and share some great educational moments with them afterwards. My son and I went through a HUGE encyclopedia of dinosaurs after this movie and we had a great time!

Anyway, I can't speak for any of the sequels, but the original Land Before Time is a great family movie.

My husband loved this as a gift. He is a long-time comic book fan and this gave him an opportunity to read some of the very first editions that are way before his time. They look amazing on the computer, plus you can print if you want. (with 15,000+ pages I can't imagine why you'd want to) I was concerned about Mac compatibility, but since the thing is just a PDF interface, you just need Acrobat, no special Windows-only software. We're looking to pick up the Spiderman collection next.

Michael Clayton is a movie about a "janitor" for a large law firm. The janitor is a lawyer, some people say he is a private investigator, who handles the tough problems that can't be presented in court.

The cast is excellent. George Clooney is believable as the firm's "miracle worker". Tilda Swinton is effective as a success driven attorney and Sydney Pollack makes a good boss for Michael.

The filming and technical support make the story gripping and very exciting. The action, which has several flashbacks, is rapid and thrilling. This is a fun movie.

Customer Review: Mostly good

The only complaint's I have is that I had a bit of a problem converting my quicken data into quickbooks. I was back and forth with quicken and quickbooks customer service because one doesn't know or help with the other.

The other thing would be the possiblity of being able to recieve (record)payments right at the time your typing up the invoice rather then going to a seperate window.

I wish they would combine the best of quicken and quickbooks!

I don't have a #2 yet but I am an elementary art teacher and let me tell you that I absolutly love this book. It is done in a fun way that tells both the mom and baby's point of view and gives fun facts that kids can relate to, like you were the size of a toster and what kinds of things the baby is working on at each stage of pregnance. I buy it for all my friends who are expecting, especially if it is # 2 or #3!

Customer Review: Good, if you are mainstream...

... but if you are planning an out of hospital birth or a birth with midwives, it's not quite as peachy. There is an illustration of mom at the doctor's office getting checked out early on, a reference in the text to her seeing the doc when baby drops, and then she rushes off to the hospital to push and push in the final pages. No room for birth center or homebirth, the midwifery model of care or self-care.

There is also a full-page illustration of father dusting off a crib.

I also had a hard time identifying with the mother in the illustrations, who is very white upper-middle class in her dresses, make-up and workout clothing.

Parenting, lifestyle, and birth choices aside, this is definitely a book written by a mother, not a writer, and sometimes the rhymes are a bit forced. The illustrations make up for it in their jolly attitude, but are not caldecott contenders- they are quick and dirty cartoon style pen and ink, colorwash type things, with little art.

However, if you see an OB regularly, have a seperate nursery for baby, and like Martha Stewart, this book might be right on target for you!

The Haynes Repair Manuals are well worth the money. Keep in mind these are not as detailed as the auto manufacturer's service manuals, but of course you are only paying a fraction of the cost as the manufacturer's service manuals. These manual include most anything a weekend mechanic needs. They include several photos of repair procedures, tune-up specifications, torque specifications and electrical wiring diagrams for your vehicle. There are times the Haynes manuals lack some detail of your vehicle, but overall they are a good buy. I would recommended these manuals for most people. I always buy one for every vehicle I own.

It was just hours after George W. Bush had been re-elected President of the United States in 2004 that sportsbooks began posting betting lines on who would win a four-year lease on the Oval Office in 2008.

John McCain, the Arizona Senator, and Hilary Clinton, the Senator from New York, remain the frontrunners for the Republican and Democratic parties, respectively. McCain, because of his maverick nature, has appeal with moderates, swing voters and conservative Democrats. That would be a formidable foe in the general election but, ironically, that same independent streak?-he strayed from conservative orthodoxy on judges, taxes and gay rights--could hurt him in the GOP nomination process where Evangelical Christians and conservative activists, groups less than enamored with his stance on those issues, are a formidable voting block, particularly in the primaries.

Clinton has the opposite problem. While the former First Lady is wildly popular in Democratic circles and, should she decide to run, would be difficult to beat for the party?s nomination, remains a polarizing figure and could have difficulty winning a general election where many already have a fixed, negative opinion of her.

That said, most betting lines still favor a McCain-Clinton showdown in 2008, although juicy, double-digit prices abound for other hopefuls such as former New York Mayor Rudy Guiliani (R), Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney (R), former Vice President Al Gore (D), Indiana Senator Evan Bayh (D), Massachusetts Senator John Kerry (D), former North Carolina Senator John Edwards (D), Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee (R), retired General Wesley Clark (D) and Illinois Senator Barack Obama (D).

Posting betting lines and/or betting on the outcome of presidential elections are not new. The practices gained attention in 1948 when legendary oddsmaker and gambler Jimmy ?The Greek? Snyder predicted that heavy underdog Harry S. Truman, who had been elevated to the presidency when Franklin Delano Roosevelt died in 1945, would beat GOP standard-bearer and heavy favorite James Dewey, the Governor of New York.

Snyder based his prediction on the fact that Dewey wore a mustache and his belief that women would find that the facial hair made Dewey look ?sneaky.?

At least that?s the way the story goes.

Truman did prevail at the ballot box, famously holding up a newspaper whose headline erroneously proclaimed Dewey the winner.

Recognizing that the 2008 election may be a bit too distant for most bettors, many sportsbooks have posted betting lines in this year?s midterm election, Nov. 7.

The most prominent betting line asks bettors to wager whether the Democrats will regain control of the House of Representatives. Democrats need to pick up 15 seats to wrest control of the 435-seat body from Republicans for the first time since 1994. With an unpopular war in Iraq, low approval numbers for President Bush, and a series of scandals plaguing the Republican Party, most books have the Democrats favored to take over the House.

The Senate, where Democrats need six seats to regain a majority, is another matter. While it?s looking increasingly likely that Democrats will hold all their seats (New Jersey is a problem), as well as pick up seats in Montana, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Rhode Island, getting to six will be difficult. There are three (possibly four) more opportunities.

Claire McCaskill (D) is running neck-and-neck with Senator Jim Talent (R) in Missouri, where stem cell research (she supports it, he doesn?t) is a big issue while Harold Ford (D) is trying to prove that an African American can win in Tennessee, where Bob Corker is trying to hold the seat for Republicans.

A series of gaffes have made Senator George Allen (R) vulnerable to the challenge of former Secretary of the Navy Jim Webb (D) in Virginia while in Arizona, Jim Pederson (D) is attempting to come from behind to beat Senator John Kyl (R), the author of the recently passed ban on Internet wagering.

Many sportsbooks have a betting line on whether the Democrats will gain control of the Senate (?No? still is favored over ?Yes?) while some enterprising wagering outlets have betting lines on many of the individual races. Others still offer index wagering on how many Senate seats the Democrats will gain.

The story and action never stop in a thrilling ride that often makes you forget that you're watching an '80s cartoon with inferior graphics. The violence will also come as a mild shock to those who haven't seen this film for a while--definitely a movie for the 8 and over audience. For those who grew up on this series, this is a movie that must be watched. Unlike cartoon serials before and after, The Transformers relied on solid stories and interesting characters, a manifesto the film itself upholds with gusto and grace while also being morally responsible. Customer Review: Great stroll down memory lane, good cartoon artwork, a little cheesy dialogue

I assume if you're looking at this product, it's because you saw it back in the day, or you saw the new live-action movie (2007) and are catching up on old stuff.

So for what it is, which is an old cartoon, put into a fairly ambitious cartoon movie for its time, it's awesome. If you're hoping to find something on par with the live-action movie, you'll be disappointed.

I grew up with Transformers and saw the movie originally in the theater. I loved it. Sometimes when you go back to things like this, they aren't as good as you remember - this isn't the case. Yes, the dialogue is a little cheesy at times; yes, the plot is a little thin; but the artwork is great, and it's freakin' Transformers for crying out loud, and the story concept is pretty grand in scale.

I recommend it for true fans of Transformers old and new.

From a design standpoint, this is a very good product. But the documentation is pathetic, and was clearly never tested with new / real users. There is no explanation of how it's supposed to work. That understanding is very helpful: with it, you'll never have trouble, and will marvel at the clever design. Let's get started.

Have a bottle of wine handy on which you've already used the supplied (and very good) little foil cutter to remove the foil over the cork.

Take the unit in your hand and look at the movable parts. The overhead lever that swings outward / downward and then is reversed / brought back over the top - moves the spiral corkscrew up and down. To see this, operate the overhead lever with one hand while holding the clamping "side handles" with the other. When you move the overhead handle the corkscrew rotates.

Why is the corkscrew turning? Because it's forced to do that as it goes through a "guide" (the metal collar with gray plastic center). The gray plastic piece has an internal spiral track that forces the corkscrew to rotate as it passes through.

Here's the critical point: as long as the guide mechanism is locked in place and can't move up or down, the guide forces the corkscrew to rotate when going through.

What if this guide were locked in place on the `down-stroke,' but could move vertically on the `up-stroke'? Then the guide would force the corkscrew to rotate on the way down (so the corkscrew would penetrate the cork), but the guide would stay attached to (and _not_ rotate) the corkscrew on the way up - thus pulling the cork.

When the unit is operated correctly this is exactly what happens. But how?

Look more closely: Before using the Rabbit's `side-handles' to hold the wine bottle neck, the guide is locked in place by two protruding spring-loaded latches and can't move vertically. Try it: it won't budge. (You can actually see these small latches projecting over the top of the guide and keeping it from moving - by looking in the area above and to the far rear of the guide, near the smooth rod.)

On the other hand, when the clamping handles are squeezed onto the neck of a bottle, these latches above the guide _retract_, releasing their hold on the guide so it can move upward.

Do this now: Take your bottle of wine and, with the overhead lever rotated to its fully outward / downward position, place the guide directly over the cork and grip the neck of the bottle _firmly_ with the clamping side handles.

Look at the latches described above: they have retracted, and no longer restrain the guide from moving upward. This has no effect during the down-stroke / cork penetration phase, since the guide is already as low as it can go. Because the guide can't move, it forces the corkscrew to rotate when you operate the overhead lever - thus penetrating the cork. Perform this down-stroke.

Now watch what happens when the overhead lever is pulled back to withdraw the cork (while you at the same time continue to grip the bottle neck firmly with the side levers). Because the guide can now move vertically with the corkscrew, it imposes no rotation on the corkscrew. The corkscrew stays inside the cork as the overhead lever is moved outward / downward, and the cork is extracted. Do it. You now have the cork out of the bottle, suspended above the bottle neck, and are still gripping the side handles around the bottle neck.

Release your hold on the side handles and move the Rabbit away from the bottle. The cork is still attached to the corkscrew. Re-grip the side handles with one hand and once again operate the overhead lever, bringing it all the way back to its fully closed position again (as if you were on the original down-stroke into the cork).

As you get to the very end of the stroke, you will feel resistance and will hear a click: the latches have snapped back into place over the top of the guide, locking it in place. The guide is once again `captured' - and cannot move vertically. The cork is still attached to the corkscrew.

Finally, move the overhead lever back yet again to its fully open position (as if pulling the cork from the bottle). This time the latches _don't_ retract (because you're not using the side handles to grip the bottle neck) - so the latches again keep the guide from moving, and this forces the corkscrew to rotate `in reverse' as it passes upward through the guide. The corkscrew backs out of the cork and the cork drops off. It takes all of a few seconds once you get the hang of it.

Understanding the operating principles should help. None of this is well explained (or, indeed, explained at all) in the almost non-existent documentation.

Great packaging and well built. It works fine and as advertised but the directions are less than adaquate. Even a mechanical minded-friend had to fool around with it before he got it to work and could show me. I've always been a dunce at this kind of stuff.

She likes what she hears and lets him know. Turns out she's a musician, too. They work on a few songs together and a friendship is forged. She lives with her widowed mother, who doesn't speak English. He lives with his widowed father, who owns a repair shop. Since he broke up with his girlfriend, the guy has been drifting, unable and unwilling to get his life in order. The girl encourages him to pursue a record deal, and the guy emerges from his funk. Then he makes a move on the girl, who rejects his advances. He's confused, but as he comes to find, there's a reason she's keeping her distance. Though Once is filled with appealing folk-pop by Hansard and Irglová (released on CD as The Swell Season), the movie isn't a traditional musical, but rather a more optimistic Brief Encounter. Filmmaker John Carney, Hansard's former bandmate, captures the real city--in all its affluence and poverty--rather than the picture postcard version. His beautifully shot film serves as a heartfelt ballad about all the underclass Guys and Girls swept aside amidst Ireland's economic miracle. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

The hardest part of being a new mother is taking the time to simply enjoy your new child and store away all of the precious memories. New babies require a tremendous amount of time and energy. You are completely consumed caring for your infant, when suddenly, your baby is a toddler, and you never had a chance to start, much less finish his baby memory book. This scenario is so common that it?s actually embarrassing to mothers everywhere. There are ways to be sure those memories are preserved, however.

Plan Ahead

The best plan of attack, especially if you are expecting your first baby, is to fill out the baby book before he is born. Obviously you don?t know his birth weight or have those tiny footprints yet, but a significant portion of most baby books contain information seemingly unrelated to your little bundle of joy. Family trees, information about Mom and Dad, grocery store receipts, popular movies, and the like can all be dealt with before baby?s arrival.

As the third trimester draws to a close, young mothers-to-be are left with a great deal of anticipation with no outlet. You can only fold tiny clothes so many times, after all. Why not use that time to work ahead? Assemble the photographs of baby?s first house, the nursery, and family members. Write amusing anecdotes about your pregnancy and baby showers. Find those ultrasound pictures and paste them onto the right page. Do as much as you can, because you will never have this much spare time again ? or at least not for eighteen years.

The Early Days

Immediately following the birth of your baby, follow your doctor?s advice and sleep as much as possible. Hopefully, you will feel much more rested a week or two after baby?s arrival, and can start using his sleeping time as your work time. During the long naps of a newborn, assemble the materials from the hospital. Birth weight and length, birth certificates, wristbands and hospital photos are now ready to take their place of honor in the baby book.

Write as much of the birth story as you can, or even simpler, print out the email you sent to all of your friends and family and paste that into the book. Reading an email designed for others to read, your grown child will truly get a sense of the love and pride his mother feels for him, her new baby. After the birth information is recorded, there are surprisingly few pages left to fill. These involve monthly updates, teething, and milestones. Unfortunately, these are actually the hardest to finish.

The Rest of the Year

After a couple of weeks, newborns realize it is much more fun to be awake than asleep, and the real work of motherhood begins. As you spend the next twelve months exclaiming over every burp, coo, smile, and step, jot a note about important dates or milestones and throw them into the baby book as they occur.

Don?t try to find the time now to fill the book in, just stick the occasional note, especially those from the doctor with height and weight measurements, into the book. Descriptive emails should be printed out and shoved into the book as well as extra copies of your digital pictures. When you print your pictures, get a few extras of your favorites and throw them into the baby book, too.

Someday, when your child is sleeping through the night, and before you have another newborn, you will find the time to actually fill in all of the little blanks. The notes, emails, pictures, and doctor statistics should cover most of the necessary material. As for the few remaining spots, leave them blank, take a guess, or make it up. Don?t worry, every mother does it. After all, your focus is on loving and reveling in your little miracle, not the exact moment his third molar came in.

I just finished helping my daughter complete her first Illustory Book about her pet kitty. I only paid $5.93 on Amazon in December for the Illustory Pet Story. Now it seems to be more expensive. My daughter is age six and wanted to use real photos of our cat so we decided to use the online version. You get to type as many words per page as you would like and the first 15 double sided pages are free. I think it took me about 2 hours just to figure out the software and how to upload my digital photos to the book. I was using a Mac and I was very frustrated at times. I said a few bad words. My daughter seemed to enjoy the process very much. Go figure. You submit the complete book online and pay the $3.95 return book shipping fee with a credit card. I thought this was going to be included in the kit price, but was it not. They say they online version speeds up the production time. We are patiently awaiting for our masterpiece to arrive. Next time, I will have her draw her own illustrations on the paper forms and mail it in. I think it is more charming that way.

Many novice handicappers concentrate on how a team performed the previous year, but in this era of salary cap constraints and constant roster turnover, teams never perform at the same level in two consecutive years. In addition, teams that performed well the previous year are no longer a good value because you are laying a much higher price with them, especially at the beginning of the next season. Start your handicapping analysis before the season starts so you'll be ready to take full advantage of the first few weeks of the season.

4. Find the best odds and gambling lines.

One last place to look for value is in the line itself. With hundreds of online sportsbooks already in existence, and more springing up every season, handicapping lines and point spreads will vary from one sportsbook to the next. Having multiple places to shop for the best lines offer bettors an extra point on many games. A few extra wins that would have been pushes, and pushes that would have been losses can make a huge difference in a handicapper's bottom line at the end of a season. A few minutes of shopping around for one last chance of additional value will make certain that you are getting the best odds for your gambling dollars.

5. Use research not trends.

The first type of a sportsbook gambling method is where you research as much as possible about the teams and the games specifically, weigh all the relevant substantive factors as best you can, and arrive at your best educated guess as to the likely outcome. The key to this method is a lot of research. The more informed your opinion or intuition is, the better.
The second method involves looking for specific trends that appear to hit at a greater than chance rate, and then betting the games that fit these trends. The overwhelming majority of such trends have little or no predictive value whatsoever. One reason I say this is because there are an infinite number of possible trends like this, so of course you can always go back after the fact and find as many as you want that have hit at a surprisingly high percentage. But you want to identify the ones that will continue to hit at that above chance percentage, and that is a very elusive task. For all intents and purposes, ignore trends and concentrate on trying to figure out who is the better team and by how much.

Last August the New York Times announced that e-books were not selling. A reporter wrote, "The main advantage of electronic books appears to be that they gather no dust. Almost no one is buying. This one crashes regularly, especially when I attempt to use the help function. Also, it does not pick up wireless signals unless they are very, very strong. I learned my first pilates mat on a specialized gym with a teacher, third in line with Joseph Pilates. Classes were really expensive and I started searching on internet for a video with the original excercises as the ones I learned. I did not have too much luck, until I saw this video and order it. It was the exact same routine that I was taught; so I left the gym and do them at home now. For any pilates course, you should always go to a licensed teacher first because if you don't you might damage your spine. There are certain positions which need help at the beginning and you can't do them on your own. After that, you can buy this DVD with confidence is really good. The purpose of the pilates workout is for flexibility,back problems and posture correction. They are excellent for herniated disk, I have two and after six months practicing pilates the pain was gone for good.

I have the DVD "Classical Pilates Technique - The Complete Mat Workout Series", which I love. But some of the stuff wasn't totally clear to me, such as when you start breathing in some of the exercises, even though it was touched on--maybe it's just me. So I got this book. When the book is open to an exercise, each exercise has a set of four pictures on the left page and on the right page there are complete instructions. I think it is useful as it is another view of what you are trying to do, so in complements the video I have. If I could only have either the book or the video, I would pick the DVD, but the book is nice to have.

A warning: Pilates, in a reference to the fact that a lot of other fitness teachers at the time were sick or had physical problems, referred to that incongruity as follows: "This is the '[N-word] in the wood pile.'" He used quotes to indicate that it was an expression, which it was at the time. This is on page 113, which is the second book within the book, originally published in 1934. Pilates himself had excellent health and was sure his system would give people excellent health.

Customer Review: Worth it if under $20

I got a super deal on this around Christmas - I think it was only about $13! It was definitely worth $13. At first it made my one year old cry. I think she thought there was something wrong with Cookie. But then she got used to him and she loves him. He made my husband and I laugh like crazy the first time we tried him out, especially when he says at the end "Oh, THAT GOOD ONE!" I agree with others; he is a big battery hog. I haven't changed out the batteries yet, so he can't move around as well right now. But he does still bend over and shake a bit, and his voice is still good. So it doesn't really matter to a one-year-old! I am glad we got it, but might not be as thrilled if he had been over $20 (as he is as of this writing.)

Films can arrive in forms of made-for-television releases, direct-to-DVD releases, or through mainstream venues. It is a magical moment beginning a film through the ending - there is a level of unknown as well as random emotions throughout. "Anne of Green Gables" was one of those surprise random moments for me where I didn't know what to expect, but went through a barrage of emotion before arriving to this conclusion. In film, it may be cliché to say "size does matter", but with exploding budgets and timelines over 120 minutes, size is becoming a hot commodity in Hollywood. "Anne of Green Gables" is one of those low budget, little screen book adaptations that literally takes every page and puts it in cinematic lights. Carrying both positive and negative attributes, "Anne of Green Gables" takes three hours of your life, puts it in a made-for-TV blender, blends, and forces you to drink the resulting concoction. How does it taste going down? Don't worry - that is what I am here for.

"Anne of Green Gables" begins with Anne's life in an orphanage, living with uncaring foster parents, all the way through her lavish life with her new parents, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. She goes through the struggles of being an independent woman living in a prim and proper world. Leading us as Anne is Megan Follows, a young girl with a television filled resume, who provides us with the shell of Anne, but not quite the full-body development. Follows is my first experience with Anne, and since there is little to judge, I must admit she was follow-able, but not quite developed. The words that she engulfed were charismatic, she defined the role, but when she walked, cried, or ran - she didn't seem to be that same Anne again. Follows felt like a stage actress trapped in an invisible cinema box. Either she wasn't allowed the explore all the elements, or she just didn't have to. This film was your typical made-for-TV movie that didn't need actors escaping their shells because they had picturesque views and longevity on their side. They were telling a story, not winning awards - and with this film it was obvious. Don't yell - I did like what Follows did, I just didn't love her performance. Perhaps a stack rankings of all the others that portrayed Anne would allow Fellows' performance to stand out, but watching this film alone - something just felt missing. Richard Farnsworth's Matthew was another abandoned character, with no emotion and void of life. Every time he opened his mouth, nothing of excitement protruded. Colleen Dewhurst was the cliché angry woman, unwilling to change, yet something about Anne eventually brings her to a new understanding of life. These two were the leading figures around Anne, and working together they provided a good story - but poorly developed characters. There was minimal emotion surrounding them as they went from scene to scene. For these actors, it was obviously a job; they allowed the movie to tell the story.

Having never read the story of Anne and her adventures at Green Gables, director Kevin Sullivan should be commended for bringing such a drab story to life. The adventures of the protagonist Anne includes minimal excitement, the cliché drunken friend, the death of a loved one, the adolescent blurts of English - all can be found in other films of this nature like "Little House on the Prairie" or any "After School Special", but Sullivan did bring some snippets of joy to this story. He made it long, which allowed us to sink into the environment, believe that it was forced, and yet one can find simple joys in the stagy-ness of it all. Sullivan's direction was impeccable; he took no risks, created nothing original, and played it by the book. He allowed the story to grow, but again, there wasn't much story to grow. Anne stays in one place, runs around everywhere, and grows an iconic challenge with a local boy who is equally as talented (and equally as drab). I am not a pre-teen girl, I am missing the "bosom" friend, and obviously this film wasn't targeted towards my demographic, but it should still entertain. Anyone who argues that they could sit through such lifeless characters must be first in line to the new Larry the Cable Guy film. While I am drawing random tangents, my point is the meat was missing from this adventure. The scenery was fantastic, the pacing was fluent, but our characters could not bring me to a second viewing. Where was the passion in this film? Why did Sullivan allow cardboard to grace his screen?

Overall, "Anne of Green Gables" was a lengthy film, with cardboard characters, but a plethora of beautiful scenes. There wasn't much music to talk about, outside of the same three chords played over and over again. Richard Farnsworth proved yet again that his name filled his resume, while Megan Follows played her part while keeping within her self-proclaimed box. As a reviewer of films, I want to see progression, development; strong single elements that make each film stand out from the cattle of the rest. With this film it felt safe, it was a family film that took no risks, it felt like a Styrofoam box on the ocean - you really should take it out, but you worry about getting wet and sea creatures. "Anne of Green Gables" was an 80s film without the pizzazz. If I had a daughter who wanted to watch this film, I could hope it would help her sleep. Coupled with the characters, the story is ironically bland, and even the director didn't push for risks. It was a film. I was happy when it was over, could never dream about watching it again, yet I can't fault it for anything dramatic. It wasn't the greatest made-for-TV film, but there is little to complain about.

It was sterile. It was cardboard. It was copper.

Let's be honest here, my favorite futuristic racers has always been Extreme-G, & Jet Moto. Don't ask me why, they've just always held a closer place in my heart than other racers of this sort. Well, I decided to get Wipeout Pure because I was jonesing for a racing game(since EA hadn't put out anything recently to get me excited about) and the price was just right for me(look at the price, it's cheap). The only other Wipeout game I've ever played was Wipeout XL on the PS1 and, sad to say, it never did anything for me. Man, imagine my surprise when I boot up the game and almost, from the get-go, I'm absorbed into the game. The sense of speed is blistering. The presentation to actual gameplay and whatnot is simply astonishing. I've only got a short list of PSP games I can actually say that about. Anyhow, this game was such a blast to play that I'm seriously thinking about getting its' followup, Wipeout Pulse.

The only thing I saw at fault in the game was an inconsistant framerate, at times. Course, games of this nature have always had this problem(especially my beloved Extreme-G series). It's nothing that hampers the game, only the pickiest will find it a gripe.

Since the PSP has neither a PSP version of Extreme-G or Jet Moto(one can always wish for them, eh?); the closest thing I've got is Wipeout Pure and, believe me, I'm glad it is there.

For this to be a 2005 PSP launch title, it still holds up today. Wipeout Pure is a deep & rewarding game. Definitely a must-have for racing fans.

I've played a couple of the previous versions of WipeOut and have always been impressed by this series, but the latest version for PSP is exceptional!

The handling of the car is terrific; you can use the D-pad or analog stick for subtle taps, and the shoulder triggers work airbrakes for harder, tighter steering.

The graphics look beautiful, almost jewel-like, and the selection of music works well with this face-paced game.

You know a racing game is great when you find yourself leaning your body left and right as you swoop through the curves.

The only caveat I've found is that apparently there are online downloads (extra courses, cars, etc.) available at the developer's web-site, but when I try on numerous occasions to download it times out. I suspect it's because the downloads are only available to certain countries, and my country is not one.

All in all, I rate WipeOut Pure a 9.5 out of 10. Fantastic!

Whilst most parents recognize the benefits of introducing their children to books at a young age, the sheer number of books available can make the selection of appropriate titles a daunting task. The following pointers should be considered when buying or borrowing books for your toddler.

Firstly, remember that reading should be fun both for your child and for yourself. The Text should be lively and easy to follow, with only one or two sentences per page, so that the story progresses quickly.

A truck loving boy may not enjoy a book full of pretty fairy pictures. remember, however, to try to expose your child to different subjects - whilst your truck lover may not come round to fairies, you may be able to interest him/her in dinosaurs.

A common trap to avoid is the presumption that the price of the book is an indication of its quality. There are very many cheap picture books which offer excellent text quality and a great many expensive books which will fail to appeal to toddlers.

Wise selection of books for your toddler can help to foster a love of reading in your child which will last a lifetime.

works just as well as the 4.0 version but found some of the directions incomplete and confusing (ie. printing out a cookbook). And I'm unable to find out how to print more than one recipe on one page.

Customer Review: Don't get download version!

I got the download version 3 months ago, and have only just found out through an online discussion forum that all the problems I'm having using it are due to inherent defects in the download version. Apparently those who buy the CD will not experience these same issues (I don't know for certain though). Basically, the downloadable version functions more like a demo version; some features like export and import are limited or don't work at all (you can get recipes in one at a time, but can't select multiple recipes like the instructions tell you you can). A friend of mine and I have both had the same problems (we both bought it at the same time to swap recipes). Tech support is completely useless for these problems and customer service just keeps telling me to re-download it rather than deal with the problem of defective software (I would like them to just send the CD version that works).

I'm really disappointed, as it seems this could be nice software IF IT WORKED RIGHT.

So, if you're going to purchase this and are deciding between the download and CD version, get the CD. You'll have to wait a few extra days for delivery, but will avoid all the aggravation of the download version's bugs. They shouldn't even offer the download version, because it doesn't work right at all.

It's also worth noting that this software is not really very user-friendly for the beginner. Once you play with it a while, it has some nice features (buggy ones notwithstanding), such as being able to embed recipes (i.e., want to write a pie recipe? You can insert an ingredient as "Pie crust" and link to your pie crust recipe without typing it all out twice) but there is a steep learning curve. If you're adventurous and willing to randomly click ambiguous icons, you'll figure it out, but if you're someone who needs blatant, step-by-step instructions with really obvious menu options in software, you might struggle with this one.

However, even if you get nothing else out of it, the included recipes are worth the price of the software; you'd spend far more than that buying recipe books to get that many recipes. So at least I don't feel like I completely threw my money away getting defective software if I can't get it replaced with a functional version.

It is curious that the Halo 2 soundtrack was broken into two separate CD's in the first place, instead of just the 4 songs from the major bands that weren't part of the game. If you are true fan and just have to have all the music, drop the 10-12 bucks (new). Otherwise, I much prefer the music from Halo I.

Planet Earth, the series, is without doubt, the finest nature film ever made. All of their shots are breath-taking, with some appearing to be almost impossible to make. How they were able to capture so much wild-life, and rare wild-life at that, on film is both a wonder and a testament to the dedication the producers and film makers brought to the project.

And if you own a Blue Ray Disc Player, this is one film (there are four discs) that is simply a must for your collection. In fact, such is the realism and dynamic impact, I mounted my digital camera on a stand and took still frame shots of some of the images directly off my new 52" LCD TV screen. At 1080p, I've never seen a nature film that comes anywhere close to matching the grandeur and beauty that this series offers. The photography is so good, one might mistake it for an art film.

This is a must-have.

I bought this item on AMAZON March'08 to upgrade my laptop from 120 GB to this massive 320 GB. Assembly was a piece of cake. The drive has been running smoothly and does not make any noise whatsoever. I am happy that I could get rid of my older TOSHIBA HD that had been making lots of spindle noise lately. Now, I can store all my favorite music numbers and movies on my HD and watch/listen to them on the GO. I'll use my old TOSHIBA drive as an external drive for sometime as I just bought an enclosure on AMAZON for 25 bucks.

This case is the best neoprene case I've had yet. My 15" MacBook Pro fits it perfectly, and it is extremely easy to slide it into the case. I've also gotten quite a few comments about the case as well. Not having a zipper is great. I was looking for a sleeve to protect my Macbook and this Case Logic sleeve fit the bill nicely at a reasonable price. I wanted some extra padding and protection from scratches when I placed the laptop in a tote bag. This sleeve works great! I like that it is reversible. Also, it is a perfect fit for the Macbook and is thick and will provide a good bit of cushioning from minor impacts. Neoprene is waterproof which is also nice in case it rains or you spill something on your bag. One feature that I really appreciated is that there is NO ZIPPER! A lot of sleeves have zippers that are not shielded well from the laptop and can actually scratch your precious laptop. The flap folds down securely without any zipper. If you are looking for something with shoulder straps or extra space to carry adapters and other accessories you need a laptop bag or case and not a sleeve. A truly fascinating novel - for those of us old enough to remember going to the circus in small towns during the summer and now old enough to share the anxiety and depression of aging it covered the whole gamut. Customer Review: Don't believe everything you READ

This product is probably the most controversial electronic product out there !

With all the reviews I read: "self policing, etc" I was very hesitant to buy the drive.

BUT, I am sooooo happy I did.

The drive installed in 3 minutes. Since I have Windows Vista, I had to download the new Minionet software from the WD support site.

Once, I did the rest was easy. I saved a bunch of mp3 and backup of my DVDs. I was able to access these files (when logged in through my account) from several anywhere.. from work, from a friends house.

Now for couple of cons:

1) Wireless transfers can be very slow for large files (4-5GB files)

2) If you log in yourself, you can access the media files from any computer with internet connection. If you send an "invite" to someone else, you can cannot share the media files.

Hope this helps with your purchase decision. I'm glad I bought it.

I was a fairly loyal WD customer until this piece of junk drove me up the wall. All of the other complaints here are true:

The Mionet software is useless

The much-touted remote access feature requires a monthly subscription --blatant false advertising

It is unbelievably slow

And most important, it is just horribly unstable, throwing up all kinds of erratic behavior which will have you wasting hours to try and correct.

Avoid like the plague and shame on WD for subjecting an unsuspecting and (formerly) loyal customer to this abuse!!!

How to Prevent Theft of Your Ebooks - Part 1: Ebook Copyright

While the majority of web users are honest people, you must accept that some people WILL try their best to steal your products.

For this reason, it's important that you take some measures to ensure that your product isn't being illegally copied and/or distributed.

In this article (the first of two on this subject) I'll look at the issue of copyright protection.

In part two I'll be looking at practical measures you can take to prevent people from accessing your download pages or passing your ebook on to others

ESTABLISHING YOUR COPYRIGHT

This information is intended to act as an introduction to the concept of copyright. Please be aware that I'm not a legal expert. If you've any doubts regarding copyright then you should seek legal advice.

When you own the copyright to a work, you've the right to reproduce any number of copies of that work in any way you choose. You can also grant copy rights to others.

Once you create a published work, your copyright to that work applies automatically. You do not need to formally register your copyright in order for your copyright of that work to legally
exist. In fact, you do not even need to place a copyright statement on the work.

Having said that, it's still a good idea to formally register your copyright.

In the event that someone has stolen you work, having registered your copyright may entitle you to claim for compensation from the offender. If you haven't formally registered the work, then legally seeking compensation can be much more difficult.

THE MINIMUM YOU SHOULD DO

If you are hesitant about paying fees to register your copyright, then there are still other measures you can take to make sure that the world knows who owns your work (you should follow these steps EVEN if you DO register copyright).

You should include your copyright statement at the bottom of every page of your book (and your website and everything else you create).

Including a copyright statement is no guarantee that your work will not be stolen. It's also no assurance that you'll be able to recover royalties or loss of earnings from someone who infringes your copyright.

However, it stamps the work as being yours. It makes it clear to those who might be tempted to copy it, that they don't have that right.

Example of a copyright statement...

Note: Some people use (c) (the letter 'c' in brackets) instead of the official copyright symbol (the letter 'c' surrounded by a circle). In many countries the law does not recognize this as a copyright symbol and it's not a given that a court will accept it as valid. You should ALWAYS write the word 'Copyright' in FULL as part of your copyright statement and you should use the official copyright symbol.

You should also include a copyright page in your e-book. Take a look at the copyright information in any e-book (or paper book) for ideas on what you should include on this page.

Another idea that may be useful - in a legal sense - is to print out a copy of your e-book on paper and save a copy on to a diskette (or CD-ROM).

Place both the paper version and the diskette in an envelope and mail it to yourself via REGISTERED mail. Hold on to the receipt for the mail and when the package arrives to your home, put it away in a SAFE place (together with the receipt) WITHOUT opening it.

This is proof that you had the document in your possession at the date of the mailing. If you do this before your e-book goes 'live' then you're sure that nobody can have copied your work before this date.

I was really disappointed in the quality of the Angel Sales I Sight Light. Granted, it only cost $12.95, but it only lasted one day. We were not rough on it and used it exactly the way it was meant to be used and yet it stopped working after a few uses. Don't waste your money.

I bought 2 of these to try out, because one spot light usually creates too much shadows when you are reading, and with this product ,one is not bright enough for reading.

The biggest problem when trying to buy LED lights is that they don't specify the brightness of the light like other types of illumination products, there are no units of Watts, Lux or even mcd number for this unit, even on the package, all it says " Powerful Ultra-Bright white lifetime LED" no way to compare to other LEDs out there in the effective brightness. Although I quick search on the internet showed that these small 5mm LEDs come in brightness ranging from 800 to over 30,000 mcd (millicandles), You don't have to care about this if all you need is a task light to work under the sink, but if you want to do some precisiong work then this becomes essential info.

This unit is VERY bright if you use it to see in pitch dark places (one unit is bright enough) if you want to use this to read in the dark, you will probably be better off using 2 units together, one on each ear, this way you have more light, less shadow and your eyes don't get tired fast.

I actually bought these to work on some precise lab work; I thought they would be lighter than the Halogen Headlamp I am currently using,

2 problems; these LEDs are not bright at all if you have ambient light. And the biggest weakness of this product is the EAR Ring,

It is made of Hard Stiff THIN plastic which makes it very uncomfortable after a while. Which I hope they'll fix in the future.

Also it is hard to adjust where the beam falls.

All in all, Great Flash light replacement, Nice reading light.

After a long time I'm compelled to recommend a book to all lawyers- present or past, all judges- present , past or wannabes, with or without a conscience and every person who has the remotest interest in law and politics. It was a thrilling fictional version of all that we already know and indeed the best work of John Grisham so far.

As a former lawyer, I strongly disagree with all those who would venture to argue that those judges who are appointed are not much better than the elected ones. They sadly missed the whole point. The question here is not what is better- election or appointment. My husband and I love this cupcake book so much that we have bought it numerous time to give to our grown up children so that they can have the fun of making spectacularly whimsical cupcakes for their friends and children. The recipes for muffins and cakes are great. Every year wilton updates the creative aspects of a cake form and this one is just spectacular. The designs are doable by those with almost no coordination or cake decorating experience. The key is always to make your own frosting so it is thick enought to hold shapes, or add a LOT of powdered sugar to commercial frostings to thicken them. Anyway, there are literally 150 full color cupcakes. There are your hilarious farm animals, awesome swimmers for whom the cupcakes are inflatable innertubes, wedding cupcakes, floral, clowns, fruits, bunnies, seasonal and more. You will need to get some tips you may not normally have, but the ones you need are in the directions. I highly recommend the 24 cupcake stand Wilton makes for displaying your cupcakes. I use a 3 tiered dessert rack that is also a carousel that spins because I already have it for cakes. But there are some beautiful cupcakes that look awesome displayed on the top of any stemed goblet that has been turned upside down so the base become a litte table for the cupcake. The angel, penguin, and Christmas themes are just adorable, but there are sophisticate cupcakes too. If you buy the silicon cupcake holders you will be thrilled. Thoughful almost effortless fun for a loved ones special occassion.

Customer Review: Typical Wilton adverbook

I was a little disappointed in this book when I first got it. Since all you see on the cover is some "clown" cupcakes using the silly-feet baking cups (which I also purchased) I was expecting more uses of the silly-feet (I counted five), but it really covers whimsical cupcakes of all sorts, many of which would be suitable to make with children (easy to make).

It's really just an idea book and a catalog of Wilton products and what you can do with them. There is a helpful section called "The Perfect Cupcakes; How to bake, ice and decorate", and there are about six pages of recipes. Most cupcake instructions are from 1/8 to 1/2 page long, right next to a big, clear picture.

After getting over the "it wasn't what I expected" part of receiving this book, and seeing that my boyfriend seems rather enthusiastic about making really whimsical cupcakes and loves the silly-feet, I like this book more and more. Just don't expect anything sophisticated looking in it OR that many silly-feet ideas. If you are familiar with the typical adverbook that Wilton puts out, you shouldn't find any surprises here, and some of the recipes, which are a blend of from-a-mix and from-scratch, for the most part look very tempting.

There are six pages of really cute Halloween cupcakes, including a vampire in a coffin, and some skeletons/ghosts/tombstones.

Creating Ideas For Children's Books

Ideas are everywhere. All of the time. It's our job, as writers, to find some ideas and turn them into entertaining stories.

The most common sources of inspiration include: our experiences and personalities, children, family, pets, friends, conversations, television, newspapers, books etc.

I've never had any trouble finding ideas for stories. My problem is finding time to write all the stories.

I believe that the reason I come up with so many ideas for children's books is simple; I'm looking for them. I want them. I need them. I'm actively seeking them. I'm open to the possibilities. I'm thinking and behaving as a writer.

During conversations with friends, I sometimes find myself saying, "I like that. I might use it in a story one day." When I see something that appeals to me I often wonder how I can turn it into a story.

I look at ordinary things and ask questions. Sometimes my questions become a little bizarre. I often look for the funny side of situations or objects.

There have been times when I've chosen a popular subject, such as dinosaurs, then asked myself for a story on that subject. And other occasions when I've taken an old idea and given it a new and different life.

The simplest way to explain what I mean by the above statements is to share my personal experience. The following are the ideas behind my stories:

But first?I'm sitting in my study, writing this article. I look around the room and see the fireplace. What if the fireplace was a door to another place or world? What if I heard noises coming from the fireplace? And, when I investigate, I find Santa Claus trapped in my chimney. There are ideas everywhere. Just look for them. Ask questions.

My easy reader Sam's Dinosaur Bone originated from word association. I wanted to write a story about dinosaurs. My experience with dinosaurs was limited to museums. Mmmm?dinosaurs, museums, a child going on an excursion to a museum, being told that dinosaur fossils are found in the ground. Are there dinosaur fossils in his backyard?

I recently took an old idea, which I love, Henny Penny's The Sky Is Falling, and made it my own in my easy reader Down the Well. The hen hears a noise coming from the well. She yells down the well and a voice yells back. Someone must have fallen down the well!

I remember times, as a child, when I wanted to play with someone but no one was available. My friends and family were doing chores, playing sport, visiting friends, on holidays etc. My easy reader Will You Play? was inspired by this memory. The farm animals are too busy to play with the dog. Will he find someone to play with?

Do you have fears? I do. My novel Backstage Betrayal deals with my fear of being locked in a public toilet. I won't say any more as it's rather embarrassing. ;)

I have a definite dislike of spiders. I don't fear them. I don't hate them. I just prefer to not be in the same vicinity as a spider. This preference inspired my easy reader Jo and the Spider. Jo sees a spider in her bedroom. When she returns with her dad, the spider is gone. Where is it?

One night I went to the cupboard for a snack and saw a jar of honey. I wondered what it would be like to be honey - sticky, moist, gooey, sloppy, warm, sweet etc. But there was one big problem: you'd get eaten. From those thoughts came my book Mrs Twitch and the Small Black Box. Jess uses Mrs Twitch's invention, the small black box, to become honey. She's in danger of being eaten by her father.

A publisher asked me to write a number of non-fiction books. I was sitting at the kitchen table, wondering what subjects I could tackle, when I thought about milk. Then I decided that milk was too boring, been done to death etc. Green milk would be interesting. But wouldn't green milk be Martian milk? This idea was the beginning of my novel Martian Milk. Paul doesn't want to try Martian Milk because he's afraid it will turn him into a Martian.

The Mad Mower came from my desire to have a twin to do all the boring things in life like housework, paying bills and walking my dogs, while I did all the fun things like going out with friends, watching football and reading. Tony creates a computer double and asks him to do various chores. Ah, if only life was that easy?

Have you ever had trouble sleeping and wished that you had someone to pass the time with, but everyone is asleep? In my easy-reader Chick Catches Dinner, the little chick can't sleep and goes searching for company. She finds Hoot, a little owl, and has a fun but tiring night.

I was reading a book one afternoon. The child in the story had a teddy bear. After reading the words teddy bear, I thought to myself that I'd like to write a story about a teddy bear. My next story was called Old Teddy and was followed by Teddy's Sticky Mess.

I was watching the television news one evening and saw a story on a seagull problem in a nearby town. The greedy seagulls had become a nuisance to residents and tourists. My story The Greedy Seagulls is nearing completion.

So you see, ideas are all around us. It's your job as a writer to interpret the information you see all around you and turn it into your own creation!

Customer Review: Sinatra (Cinatra?) Knew A Good Thing When He Heard It

"Hear My Song" (1992), an Irish film, a romantic musical comedy/drama, was written by its star, Adrian Dunbar, with Peter Chelsom, its first-time director, and is filmed on location in gritty Liverpool, England, and the lovely Irish countryside. It's based on the life story of the Irish tenor Josef Locke, born Joseph McLaughlin, who knew great success in England, but was driven back to his home country by the tax man.

Adrian Dunbar, a frequently-seen actor, plays Micky O'Neill, who has leased a down-at-heels Liverpool nightclub from the large and boisterous Irish-English Ryan family (Liverpool has lots of Irish immigrants, and their descendents). He proceeds to run the club further into the ground through bad bookings; first there's Franc Cinatra, then Mr. X, allegedly Joe Locke. But Mr. X was worse than a bad business decision: the mother, Cathleen Doyle (played by the still-gorgeous Shirley Ann Field), of Micky's lovely girlfriend Nancy Doyle, (played by the luminous Tara Fitzgerald) once had a thing with the real Joe Locke, and Mr. X, at Micky's instigation, has taken advantage of her. The Ryans and the Doyles are furious with Micky: the situation's desperate. So he decides to hobo off to Ireland, to track down the real Joe Locke, (played by Ned Beatty, enjoying the role of his life). Once in Ireland, Micky meets up with his best friend, Fintan O'Donnell, a booking agent,played by the also frequently seen James Nesbitt. (Oddly enough, both Dunbar and Nesbitt are sons of Northern Ireland.) The friends find Locke and his senior-citizen posse, and lure them back to the U.K. to save Micky's hide. In the U.K., of course, the taxman, Jim Abbott, played to the hilt by David McCallum, "That Man from Uncle," remembers Locke only too well.

The movie was made for less than 2 million pounds, in less than six weeks, but it's consistently funny, although admittedly lightweight, sometimes sentimental. Micky has a great repeating line, "I haven't been where you've been, I haven't seen what you've seen," and commitment issues. A cow figures in two hilarious scenes. Beatty seamlessly lip-synchs to the glorious work of an actual well-known Irish tenor, with whom I'm not familiar. Between them they deliver a marvelous "Hear My Song," that leaves not a dry eye, nor seat, in the house. (I've got another rendition of that song in my house, by the young Frank Sinatra, who was, of course, a pretty good tenor himself. And he knew a good thing when he heard it.)

Creating Believable Characters for Children's Books

If you've read my previous articles you'll be aware that I've defined children's books as books that feature a child as the main character and the audience is children.

So, let's take a look at children as characters.

In picture books, no description of the characters is necessary. Picture books are highly visual and therefore all characters are obvious from the illustrations. When writing picture books, you have a limited number of words to work with and you can't afford to waste words on unnecessary description.

The same can be said of easy readers and chapter books. These books still contain a lot of illustrations and a limited word count. Description should be restricted to what is essential to the plot.

For example, if you're writing about a child who is bothered by their appearance - wearing glasses or being too small - then a limited amount of description is necessary.

A general guideline when writing these shorter books for young children is to only include what is essential for the story to make sense.

To make your character seem real to the reader you must think of him or her as a real person. People are around us every day. It's useful to take bits and pieces from the people we know to create our characters. Be careful to always mix and match. Never use an entire person in a novel. That person may not appreciate it.

Always avoid stereotypes. They are boring and unimaginative. They are an example of lazy writing. Be creative.

A character comes alive through their actions and dialogue. Actions, in particular, will show a character's personality. What they do and how they react largely depends on their personality, background and experience.

For example, a child who has been bitten by a dog will react differently when confronted by a strange dog than a child who has never experienced this trauma.

Believable characters always act consistently.

For example, in my book Working Like a Dog, Lucia wants new rollerblades. Her parents won't buy them for her. She must save the money herself or go without. So Lucia decides to start a dog-walking service to earn money for new rollerblades. Later in the story Lucia loses two of the dogs. She worries about the dogs and spends a lot of time searching for them.

The action in this story shows Lucia's character. She's a likeable responsible young lady. She is prepared to earn the money to buy new rollerblades. She could have stolen the money or rollerblades. She could have bullied other children for their lunch money. She could have nagged her grandmother into giving her money or rollerblades.

When she loses the dogs, she could have left them to find their own way home. She could have lied to the owners about losing them.

Lucia is responsible when she decides to earn money to buy her own rollerblades. When she loses the dogs she is responsible and searches for them until she finds them.

Lucia acts consistently and her behaviour is believable.

Imagine if Lucia decided to lie to the dog owners about knowing what happened to their precious pooches. She could say that the dogs were missing when she went to walk them. This element of the plot would probably be hard to swallow considering what we already know about Lucia. She would suddenly seem unbelievable.

It is essential to know what your character wants - their motivation. And why they want it. Your character's goal must be something that readers can relate to and care about.

Your readers must care about your character and be interested in their plight. Otherwise there is a good chance they'll put your book down and never return to it.

You, the writer, must care about your character. If you don't care about him or her then you can't expect your readers to care either. To care about your character you need to know him or her well.

Sometimes writers use a habit or habits in an attempt to make a character appear real. Habits can take the form of action and dialogue. Maybe a character chews their nails or adds the word "like" to the beginning of too many sentences or wears a particular type of clothing.

Be careful when giving your characters habits. Too many habits can distract the reader from your story and become an annoyance.

Characters should be kept to a minimum in children's fiction. Too many characters can confuse our young readers.

As children's books become longer and your audience older, there is more room for character development. But it is important to remember that every word in your book should be essential to the plot.

I've had this for a little over a month now, and have been using it in a mirrored RAID configuration. It is currently serving as my TimeMachine backup destination, and as the storage for my media server. It's nice and fast, and quiet enough that it does not distract from watching movies or listening to music. Additionally, it looks quite nice on my bookshelf.

CD Audio Books Save Bark

Many people who are frequent travellers, have found books in CD audio format so much lighter and easier to carry than the traditional hardback or soft-cover book

When clearing through security screening at airports, taking off shoes while balancing a paperback book is certainly an uncomfortable feat that no posture can carry graciously and stay composed and dignified.

Audio books come in a range of formats but once they are downloaded onto CD you can then choose how and when to enjoy listening to them.

As a pretty frequent traveller, I find my MP3 player to be the most convenient. It?s light, extremely portable and fit?s into a crowded handbag (or purse) with ease.

The other thing I like about CD Audio books is the price.

Because no trees lose their lives? or have their bark disturbed in the making of them, I hope I may be saving a tree somewhere on the planet too.

I am quite happy to disturb a few electrons and know that as my listening is a quiet affair, no one even has to listen to pages turning.

The other thing I like about CD audio books is that I can blot out a ?talky? passenger.

Some people seem to think that just because you are seated beside them in an aluminium tube hurtling through the air at a great rate of knots, that you are a captive travelling companion.

My experience has shown me that I am less likely to be expected to talk if I appear to be listening to my MP3 player. People respect that and leave me alone.

I know that I am saving my bark too when I appear unapproachable.

Design
With a total weight of 5.1 ounces and slim measurements of 3.87 x 2.91 x 0.87 inches (WxHxD), the nüvi 350 is just right for the pocket or purse. A bright, 64,000-color display dominates the front of the device and a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels means that there's plenty of room for displaying map data and other elements of the device's interface. An SD memory card slot is provided for expansion software, such as a points of interest database, media files and electronic guides (see below). The flip-up antenna includes an MCX-type connector for connecting the unit to an external GPS antenna. Meanwhile, a powerful built-in speaker resides on the back of device. A built-in lithium ion battery will give you for to eight hours of battery life, depending on use. In addition to an AC charger, the unit also ships with a 12-volt power adapter for vehicle charging, as well as a windshield suction cup mount.

Fortunately, Garmin has made it easy to interface with the nüvi 350's 700 megabytes of onboard memory, thanks to "plug-and-play" USB mass storage support. Just plug the device into your computer's USB port and you've got instantaneous access to all the audio books, music, photos, supplemental maps and other data on the nüvi 350's internal and SD card memory.

Navigation
The nüvi 350 is first and foremost a personal GPS device. Wherever you go -- in your car or on foot-- the device offers extremely accurate position data, thanks to a high-sensitivity integrated GPS receiver by SiRF and WAAS-enabled, 12-satellite reception. Combined with detailed maps of the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico the nüvi 350 provides automatic routing, turn-by-turn voice directions, and touchscreen control-- making it easy to find your way anywhere. Spectacular animated action scenes turn the ancient epic poem Beowulf into a modern fantasy movie, while motion-capture technology transforms plump actor Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast) into a burly Nordic warrior. When a Danish kingdom is threatened by the monster Grendel (voiced and physicalized by Crispin Glover, River's Edge), Beowulf--lured by the promise of heroic glory--comes to rescue them. He succeeds, but falls prey to the seductive power of Grendel's mother, played by Angelina Jolie... and as Jolie's pneumatically animated form rises from an underground lagoon with demon-claw high heels, it becomes clear that we're leaving the original epic far, far behind. Regrettably, the motion-capture process has made only modest improvements since The Polar Express; while the characters' eyes no longer look so flat and zombie-like, their faces remain inexpressive and movements are still wooden. As a result, the most effective sequences feature wildly animated battles and the most vivid character is Grendel, whose grotesqueness ends up making him far more sympathetic than any of the mannequin-like human beings. The meant-to-be-titillating images of a naked Jolie resemble an inflatable doll more than a living, breathing woman (or succubus, as the case may be). But the fights--particularly Grendel's initial assault on the celebration hut--pop with lushly animated gore and violence. Also featuring the CGI-muffled talents of Anthony Hopkins (Silence of the Lambs), Robin Wright Penn (The Princess Bride), and John Malkovich (Dangerous Liaisons). --Bret Fetzer

Customer Review: Flawed in the Re-telling

There are many good things in this movie: The actual characters from the Epic, the basic setting, the intense violence, Grendel, even Grendel's mother. However, and I admit that I am biased here,I just don't think you can re-write a mythic tale that has survived for 1000 years to satisfy a modern director's idea of a good plot.

This movie is not Beowulf, it is a movie based upon the Beowulf epic. As such, it changes the central theme of the actual epic: The war between heaven hell being fought on earth as a struggle between good and evil, man and monster. I suppose that modern ideas of heroism can not accept the mythic heroism of the epic, but I feel that those very ideas are what make the original epic a truly great story.

Taking those elements out make this movie a morality tale about a false hero reaching redemption at last. The movie reflects the cynicism of the modern era I suppose, but it loses the epic qualities of the original poem.

Is it Time to Rewrite the Holy Books? (1)

The pastor from the Evangelical Church in Hackney, London, was patient but firm. There was definitely life after death, one where we would all be judged by God. But eternal salvation was possible only through strict adherence to the teachings of the Bible, and these were not negotiable.

Though I listened to him with interest, and respected him and his views, my convictions were set in concrete. My only afterlife would exist in someone else's head. I too believe in God but I also believe I was placed on earth for a reason and any judgement would not be reserved just for the future. The full works would be meted out right here and now: in the quality of my life and for treating others in ways which reflected God's teachings of charity, kindness and forgiveness. Not just for following the holy book while bitching my neighbours into the ground with selfishness and greed, being discriminatory towards them or blasting them into oblivion to feed my desire for power.

The pastor wouldn't budge. He spoke slowly and softly, as if to a lost child in need of paternal guidance. Life on earth was insignificant compared to life in heaven or hell and, anyway, my ideas had no foundation because they were not in the Bible. Black people were hardly mentioned in the Bible either, but that did not negate our presence! It seemed that everyone could quote the Bible, or their holy book, to suit their own purpose. And that is the problem with anything written so long ago. The messages get lost down the ages, gathering momentum in their obscurity as the messengers grow bloated with bigotry. Being learned charlatans of each faith, they continually use such books to maintain their power while the meanings and application become more irrelevant to our world and our needs, and the interpretation of each phrase multiply faster than an ant's nest to suit every act and occasion.

The customary straw poll of students within British educational establishments, to assess current levels of faith, might be unscientific but no less indicative of a growing areligious society. The average of people still attending church, or considering themselves religious, is now about 12 out of every 30, and falling. While these students turn their backs on Christianity, yet with nothing else to fill the gap, the Bible marches on in its obscurity and irrelevance, with its singular emphasis on Jews, Gentiles, Hebrews (no Blacks), its strange outdated place names and its virtuous tales of simple minded folk, living equally simple rural life and with not a single computer, mobile or Ipod in sight. Far removed from the technological and social revolution that is our world today. In this narrow, moralistic way, it traps each unsuspecting soul in the antiquated verbiage of a bygone age.

No Women and Gays for High Office

Meanwhile, much is done in the name of God, religion and the Bible. Despite a queen as Supreme Head of the British Church, the ordination and promotion of women is still threatening to split it because arrogant men, apparently enjoying a direct line to God's intentions, have decided that one female is more than enough! This is indicative of some key anomalies within the Church system: like women and gays being welcomed as worshippers, as children of God, but not when it comes to being ordained within God's church. Again, South Africans worship God every day yet kept apartheid alive for many years without the slightest reference to conscience or belief. Obviously their White God would not approve of their Black neighbours either! And once when I needed a priest badly, as a staunch Catholic, this man of the cloth had better things to do than to share some comforting words with me, a devout parishioner. I have not been in a church since that occasion, 35 years ago and what a wonderful difference it has made to my life!

Now the good pastor was telling me that I needed to explore my faith further. My personal beliefs did not match up to his so they couldn't be right. But I had been this way before and how much closer could one explore the teachings of God than as a novice? For three years I dwelt ceaselessly on God's words, rejecting the hypocrisies of religion when my brain reeled with instructions and ideas which promoted nothing but evil. I do not know about other religions, though, if the actions of a few fanatics are anything to go by, the Muslim faith is even worse in its capacity for cruelty, but Catholicism has a lot to answer for and we won't even mention the Inquisition or the abuse of young minds and bodies down the years. Man himself commits vile acts then call on God to condone them!

The Hindu gods also appear to take pleasure from the destruction of other people's temples and keeping their faithful members in an intractable colour system where the fair Brahmins are blessed with the right to kick the hapless, dark-skinned Harijans perpetually trapped at the bottom of the social pile. Being insignificant and, obviously, with no god on their side, these Untouchables are assigned to an immutable life of poverty, meanness and loveless inhumanity while the gods lavish attention on the favoured majority.

The Christian ethos and vocabulary are only marginally better. Each word seems to echo an unmerciful God always waiting to pounce upon us terrible sinners with the worst retribution possible. The fact that God merely reflects the moralistic and narrow ideals of the messengers in His name has been lost upon humanity. Instead, God is portrayed as an all powerful being with nothing better to do each day than to be picking us off in turn to note our numerous sins! The Bible said so, the male priests preach it and we have to live it. So, as a teenager, I had a miserable anxious, guilt-ridden childhood. I was painfully aware that we could not really enjoy ourselves because everything that made us happy appeared to be an abomination to God and He was always ever present watching us. Sex was dirty and definitely out, so were rude jokes, raving parties and boys! No chance of escape as even our very thoughts constituted sin.

Preoccupation With Sex

Yet it was all a natural part of growing up, this preoccupation with things sexual, because the changes within our body were phenomenal and not really understood. The Church's obsession with sex was a revelation in itself. Only attending mass and confessing our sins regularly would save us. But save us from what? Innocent thoughts? Our bodily functions which were a natural part of our growth and evolution? Gradual self-discovery and truth about our faith? What I did not understand then was that the love of God which was so regularly trumpeted by the priests was in chronically short supply because it had been replaced by fear of God, and nothing ruled by fear can ever be positive and uplifting.

If we missed church just once that was a mortal sin. So each Sunday I competed with the lark for the 5 o'clock call, eager to be first in line for confession, compassion and communion, but they were as straw against the merciless wind of sin and shame. I would enter the convent, that would do it, I thought. I could serve God wholeheartedly and be free from all these 'wicked' thoughts. But in between the daily masses, novenas and spiritual rituals all I heard about was sin - huge massive mortal sins; medium sized original sins; tiny fluttery venial sins. Where did it all end, this world full of sin? Did we ever get good on earth? Not on your life. We had to wait until Judgement Day.

Then one day I visited a handicapped neighbour who was a devout Catholic but was never able to attend mass. A saintly cheerful woman who would give her last penny to others, she worried and fretted constantly about committing various sins through missing mass. She had no means to travel to church and her pastor never once visited her either. I often wondered if her soul was riddled with massive black spots for all the services she missed? So many huge mortal sins. How did she cope? She must be damned in hell for good. The realisation of how such cruel brainwashing affected her peace of mind, the way it preyed on her conscience and stopped her from enjoying her life and faith fully, propelled me from the convent faster than a bullet.

Kate Nash's "Made of Bricks" isn't as sturdy a debut as critics have hailed it to be, but it is alright in terms of effort. Nash has been a hyped as a "MySpace diva" along with newcomers like Colbie Caillat, Lily Allen&Sara Bareilles. The social networking site has given her a worldwide audience... but is it worth listening to?

"Made of Bricks" is a mixed bag. The highlights are the easygoing "Birds" and "Nicest Thing", the '60s style "We get on", the un-cliched "Skeleton Song" and "Pumpkin Soup",which is spiced up with different rhythms&a unique melody. Half of the tracks are interesting. The other half,however,range from the "experimental" spoken word "Play" (with Hammond organ!) to the truly terrible "S*it Song" and "D*ckhead." I bought this for my 6 year old grandson for Christmas and he absolutely loves it. Many of the grownups were putting it on and using it too. You can turn the voice changer off if you want to, but hey, why would you want to?? It's a pretty cool toy.
